Where is the Welsh language spoken?

Cymraeg, also known as the Welsh language, is a Celtic language that has its origins in Wales and has a long and diverse history spanning many centuries.  In 2022, it was reported that about 17.8% of the Welsh population claimed they could speak Welsh, showing a slight decrease from the figure of 18.56% in 2011.

The Annual Population Survey conducted in 2021 estimated that approximately 29.5% of individuals aged three and above in Wales, totaling around 892,200 people, were able to converse in Welsh. This represented a marginal increase of 0.4 percentage points from the previous year. Welsh is mainly spoken in the northern and western parts of Wales, with the largest proportion of speakers residing in Gwynedd (75.5%) and the Isle of Anglesey (63.3%).

There are also significant Welsh-speaking communities outside of Wales, including in the Welsh settlement of Y Wladfa in Chubut Province, Argentina. Although the number of Welsh speakers has varied over time, experiencing a slight decrease from 2001 to 2007 before gradually rising since 2010, the language continues to play a crucial role in Welsh culture and identity.

The Welsh Government has put in place several programs to encourage the use of Welsh, such as the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011, which designated Welsh as an official language in Wales and introduced the Welsh Language Commissioner. These initiatives are intended to support the ongoing strength and expansion of the Welsh language despite past obstacles and social changes.

Welsh Language Dialects

The Welsh language is known for its diverse regional dialects, each representing the distinct cultural backgrounds of the communities where they developed. Historically, Welsh has been categorized into four primary dialects: Gwyndodeg (spoken in Gwynedd), Powyseg (Powys), Dyfedeg (Dyfed), and Gwenhwyseg (Gwent and Morgannwg). These dialects vary in terms of vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar, with influences from historical events like the Normans’ impact on specific regions. For instance, the Gwyndodeg dialect, which is commonly used in the northern region, is recognized for preserving specific outdated elements and its distinct vowel pronunciations.

In comparison, the Dyfedeg dialect in the southwestern area has been impacted by the English dialect spoken in nearby counties. The Gwenhwyseg dialect spoken in the southeastern region has been influenced by its close proximity to the English border and the introduction of English loanwords.   Notwithstanding these variations, all the dialects have a shared foundation that binds them together as part of the Welsh language. In the past few years, there have been attempts to support and safeguard these regional variations in language, acknowledging their significance in upholding the cultural variety and linguistic abundance of Wales.

Educational programs, like incorporating local dialects into school curriculum, and the utilization of dialects in media and literature, play a role in guaranteeing the survival of these special versions of Welsh despite the growing trend of standardization and globalization.   By accepting and commemorating the range of Welsh dialects, the language continues to be a crucial and lively component of Welsh heritage, uniting communities nationwide and conserving the traditions of the past for generations to come.
