Where is the Estonian language spoken?

Estonian is predominantly spoken in Estonia, where it is the official language for around 922,000 individuals. Apart from being spoken in Estonia, Estonian is also used by approximately 160,000 people in different communities abroad, especially in neighboring countries such as Finland, Russia, and Sweden. As a result, the total number of Estonian speakers globally is estimated to be around 1.1 million.

In Estonia, language serves as both the main form of communication and a key component of the nation’s cultural identity. There are various dialects of Estonian, with Northern Estonian being the basis of the standardized language and Southern Estonian dialects like Võro and Seto spoken in specific regions.

Additionally, there are small communities of Estonian speakers in countries like Canada, the United States, Latvia, and the United Kingdom. The linguistic diversity of Estonia is further enhanced by the presence of minority languages, such as Russian, which is widely used in areas with large ethnic Russian populations. In general, the Estonian language plays a vital role in the cultural and social framework of Estonia and its diaspora.

Estonian Language Dialects

The Estonian language has a variety of dialects that demonstrate its diverse linguistic heritage.   These dialects are generally categorized into two main groups Northern and Southern Estonian. The Northern group includes multiple dialects, with the Tallinn dialect serving as the foundation for the standard Estonian language.   Other dialects in this group include Keskmurre (Central dialect), which is also influential in shaping the standard language, Läänemurre (Western dialect), spoken in regions like Lääne County and Pärnu County, and Saarte murre (Islands’ dialect), found on islands like Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Muhu, and Kihnu.

This particular dialect is known for its unique pronunciation, including the absence of the ‘õ’ vowel. The Southern group comprises dialects such as Tartu, which is regarded as one of the main varieties, Mulgi, spoken in the Mulgi region, and Võro, often considered a distinct language due to its unique cultural identity. Seto is another dialect similar to Võro but distinguished by cultural and religious variations. These dialects exemplify the linguistic diversity of Estonian and underline the cultural variety present within the country, contributing to the overall essence of the Estonian language
