Slovenian Language Dialects
The Slovenian language is well-known for its diverse range of dialects, with approximately 50 dialects grouped into seven main categories. The Prekmurje, Littoral, and Carinthian dialects are among the most notable. The Prekmurje dialect, spoken in the furthest eastern part of Slovenia bordering Hungary, has a distinct phonetic system that shows Hungarian influence.
It also has a standardized written form that is used in literature, music, and media. This dialect differs from standard Slovenian in terms of vocabulary, with many loanwords from Hungarian, and pronunciation, including the use of the sound /ʒ/ rather than /ʃ/. For instance, the word “žamar” (shoemaker) in Prekmurje Slovene is pronounced /ʒamar/ instead of /ʃamar/ as in standard Slovenian. The dialect spoken along the Slovenian coast, known as the Littoral dialect, shows the influence of Italian and includes many borrowed words like “fešta” (party) and “štorija” (story).
This dialect is noted for its unique accent and the presence of the sound /ʒ/ in words such as “žena” (woman) and “oženiti” (to marry). The Carinthian dialect, which is spoken in the northern part of Slovenia near Austria, is characterized by a melodious tone and a specific vocabulary influenced by German, including terms like “štenge” (stairs) and “cajt” (time).
