Hinglish- A Report on Usage and Popularity in India

Aug 9, 2021

[BENGALURU, INDIA, 09 August 2021] – Today, India has the second-largest English-speaking population in the world at more than 250 million, right behind the United States. English came to India with the East India Company, and over the centuries, Indians have adapted it to make it their own.

Hinglish is a blend of words and scripts from English and Hindi. It involves extensive code-switching, wherein speakers frequently switch between the two languages. The switching is however so ingrained that Hindi speakers often do not realise that they are using foreign words in their speech.

To understand the popularity and usage of Hinglish in India, we conducted an online survey of 744 bilingual netizens. We categorised them based on their age, mother tongue, frequency of usage and where they grew up. Each participant was asked to state their preference in reading Hinglish and Hindi and asked if they often see Hinglish messages on social media.

The results are surprising – 83% or participants mix English and Hindi in their everyday speech and 75% of them see social media messages in Hinglish. Nearly 58% of respondents prefer reading Hindi written in the Latin script and only 13% of people find it easier to read Hindi in the Devnagri script.

The arrival of Hinglish and the influence of Indian words on English is also a reflection of the rise of the Indian sub-continent as an economic powerhouse. The economic boom in the country has given birth to Hinglish a fashionable new language that is used routinely in every field such as music, films, and advertising.

It is also understood globally to give India a new identity. This research survey focuses on Demographic Composition of Respondents, Usage of Hinglish, Impact of Place of Origin on Language Preferences, Impact of Age on Language Preferences, Impact of Mother Tongue on Language Preferences. It will also highlight various examples of using Hinglish in our day-to-day life.
